   A bit expensive, yes. One says, these toys are the best for keeping off drogues: there is just no money left … I love to use it to photograph. It gives me a kick to fly. It is different than in a video game where less is at stake. If you are not too wealthy, you really do not want to crash this thing or lose it. So, there is a bit of an adrenaline kick like with real flying. Despite the fact that it is quite easy to fly, one has to practice. One has to have an eye on battery life. If the juice is out, it just lands and if you would be over water, this would be the end.

   The Avata should appeal to pilots of all experience levels who want to capture high-quality, dynamic, cinematic drone footage. It’s fun to fly, captures great video, and is a stepping stone for anyone who wants to dabble in the world of FPV.

   Forget about the people complaining about DJI’s decision not to sell a package with the FPV controller. I believe this was done in order to prevent inexperienced but overconfident pilots from crashing their drones and causing a bunch of supply chain headaches by demanding replacements through the Care Refresh program. I’m sure DJI will offer a package with the FPV controller in the not-too-distant future, if you don’t want to have to purchase the controller separately.

   First, the Avata is a BLAST to fly (even with the motion controller). It’s designed for flying in close proximity with other objects. Indoors, through trees, under and through obstacles – this thing really performs. It’s been a while since I’ve had this much fun with a drone. I’m also blown away by the quality of the footage that comes out of it. The colors are great, right out of the box, and the stabilization is fantastic.

   The Motion Controller is NO GIMICK. It’s a really amazing piece of technology that allows inexperienced pilots to get their feet wet with FPV without months of practice and expensive drone repairs. It’s intuitive, responsive, and accurate (check out the attached video to see what you can do with the motion controller). It does have limitations – for example, you can’t fly backwards with the motion controller, nor can you do a proper orbit without engaging the head tracking feature in the goggles – but the pros outweigh the cons. Once you’re ready to up your game, you’ll be able to buy the FPV controller and continue your drone journey.

   The goggles are simply amazing. The image quality is spectacular, and the transmission distance is just as impressive. Transmission distance decreases sharply when there are a lot of trees or other objects between the drone and the controller, but it’s still very impressive. I will add that the goggles can be a bit uncomfortable when worn for an extended period of time, but taking a little break between batteries should help with that issue.

   Battery life is also very impressive. From what I understand, the typical cinewhoop battery will provide 3 to 7 minutes of flight. I’ve been able to get 14 minutes with the Avata with brand new batteries, and expect that they’ll provide a little more after they’ve gone through a few charge/discharge cycles.

   All in all, the Avata is a fantastic product that I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone in the market for a new drone.

   I’ve been using the DJI Avata for the last 3 weeks and so far I have been loving it a lot. At first I thought I was gonna be overwhelmed with the motion controller, since this is my first FPV drone and I usually use a Remote Control with other drones. But man was I wrong, the motion controller is so fun to use and precise, I have been able to fly the DJI Avata through tight places with it with no problems. At the beginning everything wasn’t perfect though since you have a learning curve, especially if you’re new to any type of drones. Video quality (up to 4K 60) and pictures come out real nice, stabilization also works well, but I would suggest downloading gyroflow to stabilize your videos anyways. Battery life could be better since it only lasts for about 12 to 18 minutes, Of course it all depends on how you fly your drone. I ended up purchasing another battery for it and now I’ve had better sessions of flight. Because trust me since you’re having so much fun flying the DJ avata you won’t want to stop flying it. So far I have had only 2 bad signals between the drone and the goggles 2 when getting at a not so far distance, but I’ve managed to resolve it by getting in a better spot. Important* This package does not come with a charger which I suggest you purchase a 65 W charger or higher or you will be waiting for a while for it to charge. I have been using my Samsung Galaxy’s fast charger and it charges the battery in approximately 1:30 to 2 hours. In conclusion this drone is fun and easy to use and would recommend it to anyone who is looking into FPV drones (cinewhoops).

   I was flying FPV 10 years ago with an antenna module hanging off DJI Phantom1. That was expected to be clunky and cumbersome and difficult to set up. I expected things have improved since then, so I got this combo that promised off the shelf FPV. Connecting the FPV stick (not motion) controller was a 3 hour hassle with multiple attempts to flash a new firmware, otherwise it can not be linked. Then there is a whole bunch of regulations – registering the drone with FAA, uploading the serial number. This drone will not fly without remote ID, meaning everyone knows who you are and where you are flying from. That would be ok, but apparently I’m surrounded on all sides by airspace restrictions. Look at B4UFLY – major restrictions all over the place. So when I go to a park that is actually a “recommended” spot to fly, I discover that AVATA is frigging loud. Like super loud. My wife asked me to stop flying multiple times, as she’s concerned I’m disturbing other park goers. The new remote ID requirement means that I always have to have my phone plugged into the goggles with the DJI fly app open. So there are two cables hanging all the time. This is cumbersome. The video quality is ok, although I physically can not position both eye pieces to avoid parts of the screen streaming and being illegible. So I finally come home and want to show my wife the video. And you know what? There is no way to upload it from the Avata internal storage to the phone. I can transfer it to an SD card (very hard to reach spot), but I can not stream the video or just send it to the phone (not supported). So let’s recap: I have to drive pretty much as long as I fly to find clear airspace. I fly this embarrassingly super loud drone. I then try to download the video but I can’t.

   This drone with the joystick controller is one of the most enjoyable I have ever flown. I have been flying for several years, and am usually very cautious as a single bump can cause a crash, and the blades are very vulnerable (even with guards on). But this drone was designed to take some beatings. I have taken a few crashes with it and it just keeps on going. I added a video of flying through a tree in my yard, and I bump a branch, the drone just shrugs it off. With the joystick controller and FPV goggles I feel like I am flying a plane. When I put it into sport mode I have hit over 32 mph and can dive, clime and turn very smoothly and quickly. It is as close to flying as you probably could be without doing it. The camera take great photos and videos even when it’s not a sunny day. Everything is USB-C charging which makes life easy as those cables and chargers are everywhere now. Flight time is good at about 15+ minutes per charge (yes that’s a lot of flying trust me) This is NOT a photo platform like the Mavic or Phantom series, it also isn’t a racer (at least with the joystick), it’s a cross between the two. My Mavic Mini is a much more stable and reliable platform for taking controlled videos and photos. My racer drone can out maneuver the Avata with ease, but it’s right in between these which makes it very fun. I have heard that with the DJI Controller 2 it may be able to rival my racer drone, but I don’t have one available to test. Now for the dislikes, updating is sometimes cumbersome as you need all of the devices to be turned on and synced and if they lose connection you have to start all over. A phone must be connected to the FPV goggles to update which isn’t horrible but annoying. I wish they had put the battery for the goggles in a better place or at least given the caddy so it can clip to the back of the head-strap without making another purchase. The microsd card slot in the FPV goggles is sometimes tricky to get the card in or out. The microsd card slot and USB-C port are in a HORRIBLE place on the inside of the one of the blade wells. I am a bit unimpressed with the fly home capabilities as well, it crashed into the side of my house when I let itself try. I will admit I expected it to act like my other smart drones and gain at least 100-200 ft of altitude before flying direct home, but it did not. The biggest annoyance, a spare battery for the drone is about $155, and most times I really want another battery. You can get the “fly more” addition and for $270 get two batteries and the special charger, but honestly……………..it’s steep. Conclusion, if you can afford it and want to fly, this is an AMAZING drone for someone who’s new or experienced. I have had so much fun flying this machine and have done so almost every day since I got it. DJI upped the level of awesome with this machine and the advertisements didn’t lie about it’s abilities.
